Welcome to New Erra! We are Kane and Kelcie Warren and we “accidentally” started a farm. We purchased our property in beautiful Lake Country BC in March of 2020. The 5-acre property was an amazing flat, open space and perfectly located for our dog walking business ‘Da Kane9 Squad to grow into a kennel and daycare facility. But with Covid taking hold right as we moved, our priorities shifted a bit. No one really needed dog care or boarding as everyone was at home, same as us. So what better way to fill our time than to work our property to become a little more self sustaining in a world that had become less dependable? Our farm name is an imperfect anagram of our last name (we are farmers, not English teachers!) but it still perfectly summed up how we felt taking on this project and placed a personal imprint of ourselves onto it. It has taken a while, with a lot of missteps and reworks, and it will likely take many more, but we are finally at a point where we can start reaping some of the benefits. And we would like to share a little bit of our hard learned knowledge with others to help them avoid some of the pitfalls we fell into. We have learned invaluable lessons through trial and error, and while we know there will be many more hurdles to overcome in the future, we are finally reaching a point where we can begin to reap some of the benefits of our hard work. In the spirit of community and sharing, we are eager to pass on some of the hard-earned knowledge we’ve gained throughout this journey. Our experiences have shown us that it is indeed possible to maintain a full-time job while managing a homestead, even if you only have a quarter-acre of land. The key lies in scaling your efforts to fit your lifestyle and resources while remaining adaptable to the changing circumstances around you. We are truly excited to have you along on our journey into our New Erra, and we hope that by sharing our experiences, we can inspire others to pursue their own agricultural dreams, no matter how big or small. Together, we can navigate the ups and downs of farming and create a community of support and learning, celebrating the joys and challenges that come with cultivating the land and living more sustainably.
